The United States of America has been on a terrifying ride for over 40 years, but there is hope on the horizon, and President Trump today took a large step towards restoring our national morality. In an announcement that is being cheered by people everywhere who value life, the Trump administration has drawn a clear distinction between those who provide contraception and those who provide abortion. In an email to The Weekly Standard, a Trump administration official said, “The proposal would require a bright line of physical as well as financial separation between Title X programs and any program (or facility) where abortion is performed, supported, or referred for as a method of family planning.” This is great news.
Run by the “Office of Population Affairs” within the Department of Health and Human Services, Title X is most famously known for providing funding to abortion clinics, which has become synonymous with Planned Parenthood. Established in 1970 under President Richard Nixon, the law says that none of the funds under Title X can be used for abortions. That sounds good, right? Yeah, but that’s not how things worked out.
In the 1970s and 1980s, it was interpreted in a way that gave Title X funding to places that refer patients for abortions, as well as places that are located in the same building as abortion clinics. So, in essence, federal funding of abortion via Title X was happening. Then came the year 1988, and the darling of conservatism (President Reagan) ordered that interpretation to stop. It was challenged, but upheld in the courts. In the end, however, it didn’t matter, because when Bill Clinton came to office he killed the Reagan regulation. Title X once again started using the perverted explanation the left had become so reliant on, and to this day we have seen money funneled to Planned Parenthood via deceptive means. That is, until Trump.
The Trump regulation will interpret the 1970 law as requiring absolute separation between contraception and abortion activities. It’s a great win for conservatives, and a great loss for Planned Parenthood. Essentially, clinics that refer women for abortions would not get federal funds, so that means PP stands to lose millions of dollars in tax-payer funding for abortions. This is truly a great moment for the lives of those yet unborn. It’s also in agreement with America, as a Marist poll shows that a majority of Americans (to the tune of 60 percent) don’t want taxpayer money being used to fund abortion.
Planned Parenthood is indisputably the nation’s largest abortion provider. According to their 2013-2014 report, they performed 327,653 abortions. That’s 327,653 lives that were snuffed out by an organization that prides itself on valuing life. Why, in that same report they dared to say, “Until 1973, young healthy American women were dying because of illegal and unsafe abortions. Today, abortion is one of the safest medical procedures in this country.” Safe for those taking the life, yes, but quite unsafe for the one having his arms and legs ripped off.
We will one day recognize this as a stain on our national history, but Planned Parenthood currently receives approximately $500 million in taxpayer funding each year. This is done mainly through the Medicaid and Title X programs. That’s especially disgusting in light of the fact that they were caught in 2015 discussing the sale of baby parts on video.
People say, “Well, abortion is only 3 percent of what Planned Parenthood does.” Would we say the same about the anti-Trump shooter at the President’s golf course this morning? His name is John Oddi, and his friend of 10 years (Luis Gonzalez) said, “He’s a regular guy. I’m surprised he did that.” You see, when you do something violent or heinous, it overshadows all the other ’good’ stuff you do. You can’t shoot everybody in a fire station, then claim you’re a good person because you conserve water when you take showers. You’ve lost the moral argument and the only thing that matters is your reprehensible actions. That’s Planned Parenthood. It doesn’t matter how many cancer screenings they perform or checkups they provide, one abortion of an innocent child is enough for us to call them wicked.
President Trump has done more for America and the value of life than the past three Presidents combined. His accomplishments have been lasting ones, such as putting Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court, giving Americans back their money by signing the tax cut bill, and moving the American embassy to Jerusalem. Add to that impressive list this rule change, showing us once again that he is someone who will make the right decisions on the most important issues.
While many on the left will scream and pout and stomp their feet, unborn children across America will rejoice. This nightmare ride our nation has been on since Roe v. Wade is slowing down, and one day we will see it finally come to screeching halt. That day is not today, but this was a good moment in the journey back to having a conscience. Expect more moments like this in the months and years to come.
